Jason McCool trained as a composer at the Eastman School of Music with teachers including Michael Cain (jazz composition), Ralph Alessi (jazz composition), Fred Sturm (jazz/big band composition, film scoring & commercial arranging), the late/brilliant Ray Pickens (composer of "Mr. Potato Head" and "Transformers"), and Cary Ratcliff (orchestration), and has studied privately with Rodney Lister at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, MA, and pianist Art Lande in Boulder, CO.

Everything else he figured out by guessing.
